What You Can Expect from Wireless Technology

By: Einar Rosenberg

Ok, for all of you who think we're going to follow Japan when it comes to cell phone and wire- less technology, well, don't be so sure. So, let's talk wireless technology. For most of us, "wireless" is our cordless phone, our cell phone, our pager, and for some, our laptops. The truth is that the future will cut the cord for many other things. Because of that, things will get smarter and you'll get more bang for the buck. Your cereal will go wireless. Yes Fred and Barney's fruity pebbles will be wireless. "What the hell does that mean to me?" you might be thinking. Well, it will eventually mean a lot.

For instance, when you're at home, your wireless chip embedded into the cereal box will let you scan it to your computer and link it to your diet program to count calories, remind you of expiration dates, let you automatically or selectively buy a new box, and so much more. If you own a store, you'll see this smart and wireless cereal box be more important and profitable; you'll know how many cereal boxes you have at the touch of a button. Some people think they know by using inventory software today, but that software is only as accurate as the last time you checked the whole store. You'll know instantly if something is missing due to shop- lifters, purchases, etc.

Now lets talk about cell phones, PDA's, and laptops. So you're fully wireless with high speed, and you won't have limits anymore. You're on a trip to the Far East, and you can't stand the fact that even though its morning here, the OC is on FOX back home… guess what, you can watch it streamed to your mobile phone on the subway. How? Well your cell phone will be recognized by a network as to
where you normally live and your present location. Now you won't be able to skip local commercials but you'll be able to either see it live anywhere in the world or record it, like Tivo, on your cell phone, laptop or PDA. You'll also never have to buy a hard drive again. You'll have a virtual drive that can be accessed any were from unlimited devices. Imagine being able to listen to all your MP3's, watch all your videos, and read all your books or magazines, from any one wireless device even though it's not yours.

So what are the wireless devices? Well it's not just the laptop, PDA or cell phone. You'll see kiosks that are wireless and net connected, as well as billboards and signs on the street. All the TV's in the future will be wireless and net connected. This means that things will be "smarter". Now don't think that you'll just become a mobile couch potato. The fact is, being wireless can help you, save your life, and hopefully, bring world peace. Yes, any information you want, its there.

You're in Moscow now, but you don't speak Russian, so what do you do? You'll access a website that downloads a little application to your cell phone, which grabs the words that are spoken from the microphone of your cell phone and sends it to a server, a very powerful computer, to translate. Right now, our cell phones are powerful, but they have limits, just like your pc's do. In the future, wireless technology will allow all the hard work of processing to be done elsewhere and you can enjoy the benefits without having to upgrade all the time. Wireless access to devices such as heart monitors will allow paramedics to have a doctor in a hospital in Bangladesh to help them treat a guy having a heart attack in Pittsburg. Wireless will also let the net be free with no road blocks and no filters, so if you're in China, the day will come when you will see live video of anything, and read or hear anything, anytime, anywhere.

Even our clothes will be wireless. From interactive t-shirts for sports fans that show highlights or updated scores of big games to jackets that will regulate body temperature based on approaching weather patterns. When people say
wireless is the next revolution, they're not kidding. Wireless technology takes all limits from individualized and global applications. It will make your lives easier,
safer, and healthier. But with everything that is good, I'm sure someone else out there can write an article about the bad things that may come from a wireless future. I guess in the end, it's what you do in your own wireless future that counts.
