DJ Alex Gold

Alex Gold Bounces Back from Near Tragedy to Kick off the New Year South Beach Style.

By: Emily Tan

You can’t keep a good man down, and nobody has proven that better than UK-based DJ and producer Alex Gold. After recovering from an injury that broke his back and nearly paralyzed him, Gold is back on the global DJ scene with a vengeance and a renewed sense of mission. Gold’s vision is clear: reunite with his legions of loyal fans, do it big, and do it right. Fortuitously, Privilege – hailed as the world’s biggest club with a capacity of 10,000 people – on the Balearic party island of Ibiza gave Gold his own weekly “Xtravaganza” residency back. Not one to rest for even a moment, he spent the entire summer actively involved in the promotion, creative, talent-selection and production of his branded nights, and his efforts have paid-off. Look for Gold in Ibiza next summer.

For New Year’s Eve this year, Alex Gold has just announced that he’s playing a very special, intimate party with his old friend, the legendary Danny Rampling, at club Love on Washington Avenue in South Miami Beach. Frequency Magazine spoke with Gold from his recording studio in the UK and caught a glimpse of what’s to come in the New Year.

Emily Tan: You play to packed clubs of 3,000 people or more at Privilege in Ibiza. For New Year’s Eve, why did you choose to play at Love in Miami, a venue that only holds 500 people?

Alex Gold: Well for starters, it’s a brand new venue…and I’ve always wanted to play in Miami on New Year’s Eve. Suddenly, this gig came-up, and Danny [Rampling] was going to be in the vicinity. We’re old friends…and we thought we’d do an intimate New Year’s Eve party together. I really like the idea of being in the warm, Miami sunshine on New Year’s Eve!

You’re playing at club Love in South Beach for New Year’s Eve. Are you playing any other New Year’s Eve gigs this year?

Gold: We may do an afterhours party, but at the moment we’re playing at club Love in Miami. We’re fully committed to that show. After having done huge gigs for so many years, it’s kind of nice to take it down a notch and do a really special, intimate party. There will be an afterhours party, but we’re still working on it.

Alex Gold, Priviledge, Ibiza

Are you a control-freak?

Gold: [laughs] I was told by people in Ibiza that I approach things with such passion, and I really do have a lot of passion for the dance music scene at the moment! I’ve met so many great people this year during my active return to the scene. Danny Rampling’s a good mate, and I couldn’t think of anyone better to share New Year’s Eve with, from a musical perspective, than him. I really have rediscovered dance music.

How has the Internet impacted you as a DJ?

Gold: The internet has revolutionized the way I shop for music, and life generally got a lot easier. It’s a great way to promote what you’re doing and…with MySpace and so on, it’s a great way for people to find and communicate with you.

If you could license your name to a lifestyle company, what would that company be and why?

Gold: It would be the finest champagne money can buy, or possibly, the best designer furniture. I’m a big fan of clean lines. Perhaps B & B Italia.

Who is your favorite pop star?

Gold: My favorite pop star would probably have to be…Madonna. An obvious choice, but she’s someone I’ve grown-up listening to. And I like that she has ‘balls!’ [laughs]

Who’s your favorite pornstar?

Gold: Myself! [laughs]

If Hollywood were to produce a film about you, which actor would play Alex Gold?

Gold: George Clooney or Clint Eastwood.

What are the top few tracks you’re hammering in your DJ sets, at the moment?

Gold:   1) “Why Why Why Ital” (white label)
            2) “Boom Boom” by John Lee Hooker
            3) “L.A. Today” by Alex Gold
            4) “Sound Of Eden” (Bodyrox Remix) by Bodyrox
            5) “First Stroke” (white label)
            6) “Chicks 4 Free” by The Scumfrog
            7) “Work It Out” by DJ Disciple feat. Dawn Tallman

After New Year’s Eve, will you be playing in Miami during WMC?

Gold: Hopefully, I’ll be doing a few shows during Conference in Miami in ’07, but it’s too early to say exactly where yet. I will definitely be back here, though. I love Miami!

Thanks, Alex!

Gold: And thank you! See you at the club…
