Hotel Unique: One of a Kind Hotel in Sao Paolo Shows off Stunning Designs with Pool and Lounge

São Paulo will never be the same again after the opening of the Unique hotel. A five-star plus hotel that promises to become a worldwide reference in design and comfort

The task was to put up a unique hotel in São Paulo, as cosmopolitan as the country’s largest city. This was an unparalleled project, never before seen here or anywhere else in the world. A town planning work of art. A world reference in hotels. Those invited to accomplish this task were the best professionals in their fields, true Brazilian creative artists. The result: the Unique. The, newly opened, five-star plus hotel, arrives in São Paulo through the good offices of the entrepreneur Jonas Siaulys, as a landmark, a symbol of the city in the new millennium.

The architectural design project is by the “master” Ruy Ohtake; The unique interior decor is by João Armentano; The unique landscaping was created by Gilberto Elkis; The unique food was planned by Emmanuel Bassoleil; And the unique construction was practically “sculpted” by Método Engenharia.

The outstanding nature of the Hotel Unique begins with its location: Av. Brigadeiro Luis Antônio, on the corner with Rua Henrique Martins, in the Jardins. Unique is close to Ibirapuera Park, to Av. Paulista, the main roads leading to the business and leisure centers of São Paulo and to Congonhas Airport. The hotel has six floors and 95 guestrooms, ranging from 36 to 312 square meters, every one with a fine view (overlooking Ibirapuera Park or the tree-lined Jardins neighborhood). The daily rate ranges between R$750 and R$7,500

The generous 1,200-person Events Space is in the basement. Covering an area 100m long by 50m wide (5,000 square meters), with a 6m high ceiling, the Space is flexible enough to form different sections each with all the required support services: reception area, kitchen, pantry, storage areas, toilets, and parking facilities.

The hotel tenders a remarkable restaurant to São Paulo: the Skye, a result of surveys conducted around the world, all undertaken by the gourmet Emmanuel Bassoleil and by the architect João Armentano. According to them, the restaurant offers a mixture of the very best in world gastronomy.

RUY OHTAKE

"THE UNIQUE IS AN INTERNATIONAL REFERENCE” Architect Ruy Ohtake defines the Unique as "inimitable in its architectural concept and its town-planning position". As in various other design projects he has undertaken, Ruy Ohtake created the hotel as a work of town-planning art. The Unique stands out for its shape – a huge inverted arc, 100m long by 25m tall - and the 1.80m-diameter circular windows contribute to the distinctiveness of the project. The two, 25m-tall access spaces, give the clear impression of a piece of town planning. Only in large cosmopolitan cities this entrance way would be possible, claims Ruy Ohtake.

The six guestroom floors are of a very remarkable design: the corridors are a succession of curves, whose tangents are blessed with natural light. In the end rooms, 12 in all, the curved shape of the architecture enabled a corresponding curved space, giving a feeling of infinite depth. A different and delicious feeling for the guests.

Three important activities complement the Hotel, operating almost independently: the bar The Wall, in the lobby; the Skye restaurant, in the penthouse, and the 1,200-person events center in the basement. All have independent entrances.

The splendid view that is unveiled on the terrace is also part of the Unique. "I have no doubt that it is the most charming view of São Paulo in the city". "The design is a reflection of São Paulo the metropolis, São Paulo the contemporary, with its content of Brazilian architecture and, it is undoubtedly an important reference point”, summarizes Ohtake.

GILBERTO ELKIS:

“THE OVERHEAD LANDSCAPING IS A UNIQUE SOLUTION”
This is his first design using the “overhead landscaping” concept by Gilberto Elkis in his entire career as a landscape artist. The reason lies in the architectural proportions of the Unique (and the need to fill the voids and spaces, and the absence of a ground level. We take overhead landscaping to mean the siting of hanging plants supported by cables. “As this is unprecedented work in my career, and, as far as I know, unprecedented anywhere in the world, the design joins the Unique context as something absolutely innovative”, explains Elkis.

JOÃO ARMENTANO:
“IT IS THE BEST AND THEN SOME”
According to João Armentano, the interior environment of the Unique is unparalleled. His office has been working for months surveying the newest elements of design. Armentano has also traveled to the world’s main cities in search of state-of-the-art items and furnishings. And, in his opinion, the Unique has produced a result that is better that all the worldwide references in the hotel business. “We have brought the best and then some, all in the name of the exceptionality of the Unique design,” he claims.

MÉTODO ENGENHARIA:
“THE UNIQUE IS THE DREAM OF ANY ENGINEERING PROFESSIONAL”
In the opinion of the chairman of Método Engenharia, in charge of constructing the hotel, the Unique was almost hand-crafted. “The team of artists tells us of their dreams and we make them come true”, explains Victor Foroni.

To do this, Método looked for solutions specially designed for this work, which covers more than 20,000 square meters of constructed area. Each stage of the construction work was carried out following tests and trials with prototypes. Everything, from the façade, covered with aged copper, to the Italian windows, which demanded a specialized technique for putting them into place, is without parallel. “It was an extraordinary adventure, but also a source of great pride to take part in the Unique project”, Foroni sums up.
